The thrill of cycling lies in the unique way it allows us to explore our surroundings. Travelling on two wheels lets you take it all in at a speed that still gets you places. Since I have recently relocated to Brisbane, I've used my bicycle to discover the city. The city of Brisbane straddles the Brisbane River and a popular way to see the sights is by Ferry. Thankfully, the extensive network of riverside bike paths makes a similar and more enjoyable journey by bicycle possible. Because of this, there are many ways to cycle around the river loop and I'd like to share my personal favourite tour here.

In 2017, I left Adelaide for life in Brisbane. After living in a cycle-friendly city I was unsure of what to expect in a much larger one. My first trip along the riverfront at half past five in the morning was eye opening. The subtropical environment makes it ideal to commute year round. I find the weather a little humid for travelling to work but the locals don't appear to break a sweat at the first sign of an incline. Bike paths to the southwest of Brisbane are well connected and all but impossible to get lost on. Living close to Brisbane River is a bicycle commuters’ dream.

The 1890's were a boom time for bicycling in Australia. Western Australia (WA) was amidst a gold rush, which attracted many hopeful prospectors seeking their fortune. Bicycling was the key form of transportation and led to the world's largest network of bicycle paths ever created. The gold rush was short lived and many of these paths no longer exist today. The use of the bicycle plummeted throughout the twentieth century. More than one hundred years later, things are changing. In the age of the hybrid car, WA policy makers are managing to renew interest in using healthy and green transport alternatives.

Money, religion, and politics are taboo topics for polite conversation. If you live in Sydney, then cycling can be added to that list. In an era of green initiatives and health awareness, the number of bicycle commuters in Sydney has taken a recent downturn.
