The Sperm Bike – Sperm Cells Cycle to the Egg in Copenhagen

Cycling in Copenhagen is a little like the “Who’s who?” of bike couriers. Cycling culture is an integral part of city culture here. Around 55% of people in Copenhagen use their bike on a daily basis, and there is scarcely anything that cannot be done or reached by bike.

For me that means independence, movement and to experience landscapes.

Ice couriers, cocktail delivery services and mobile bike workshops are all commonplace in the city. There is a huge variety of innovative cargo bikes. They are used for logistical purposes within the city as well as for private use. There is even a solar and wind-operated model.

The Two-Wheeled Sperm Generates a Lot of Attention

So no one would be surprised to see a courier in the form of a sperm cell (incidentally usually a women on the saddle) passing by? Far from it! Although the locals in Copenhagen are used to seeing striking and original cargo bikes on their streets, the impressive 2.9-metre-long Sperm Bike from the Danish sperm bank, specially developed and built by Larry vs. Harry, is proving to be a magnetic source of attention on its way to the fertility clinics and centres.

Some months after it first took to the streets, Hans Bullitt Fogh, sales manager and co-founder of Larry vs Harry, experienced it for himself: “I was on a bus that passed the bike. The bus was almost tilting to the right because everybody wanted to get a good look at the strange bike,” he reveals. “In the beginning, I was sure that the bike would be no more than a gimmick. Today it is clear that it was a wonderful idea, way better than expected.” And of course a wonderful form of self-promotion for the company.

Ensuring the Right Temperature in the Sperm Bike

The biggest challenge in the design of the Sperm Bike was the receptacle, as it was important to ensure the proper temperature for the delicate “goods” inside, while the tail section extends beyond the end of the bike. Just the job for 10 TONS, who developed the receptacle based on their extensive expertise and experience with special designs.

So far, the Sperm Bike proved highly adept at fulfilling its job (now having a little sibling in Seattle). The metal containers with the sperm donations are stored in a specially developed cooling compartment in the head of the giant sperm cell. “The fact that it contains potential babies makes me proud and happy,” says Hans Bullitt Fogh about one of the his cargo bike babies, of which there are now many, also known as “Bullitts”. The Sperm Bike has also left its mark on the Danish language. “In the same year, the term “Sperm Bike” was officially incorporated into the Danish language,” says Hans Bullitt Fogh with a hint of pride.
